Messager (1853-1929)
Description:
This lovely work by Messager, who left many light operas full of familiar melodies, was presented at the Théâtre de la Bœuf-Parisien in 1897. It was a great success, casting popular Parisian singers of the time, and the melodies sung in the opera soon became hit songs. The two Miche family daughters were raised as twins. One of them was actually the son of a marquis who had just been born and taken in. The story is about the birth of two couples, who are now 17 years old, the father of one of the daughters, who is now a general, her foster parents, and her godfather, and the pain of self-sacrifice. Dumousseau and the Nantes Opera, both well known for their French music, especially for their stage productions, give a wonderful performance that brings out the charm of the work. Naxos Japan
