Welcome to the Produce Quality Finishes by Spray Painting course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in planning, preparing, setting up, operating and completing spray painting work to produce quality finishes in accordance with work instructions, substrate requirements, spray system requirements, manufacturer recommendations, workplace procedures and safety requirements.
Producing quality finishes by spray painting involves reviewing work instructions, preparing materials and substrate surfaces, selecting suitable PPE including respiratory protection, setting up safe spray application areas and operating spray equipment correctly. In real workplace practice, this skill area is important because spray painting must be carried out in controlled, well-ventilated and dust-free conditions to achieve even coverage, required opacity, sheen levels and specified finish quality while managing fire, explosion, overspray, coating defect and waste risks.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to review work instructions; apply safety, environmental, manufacturer and workplace requirements; select PPE including respiratory protection; inspect worksites and control hazards; select and check tools and equipment; check prepared materials and substrates; protect surrounding surfaces and removed items; manage ventilation, fire, explosion and dust-free spray areas; set up application areas, spray equipment, accessories, lines, fittings and safety devices; mix paint and adjust viscosity; operate spray equipment correctly; apply spray paint to required finish, opacity, sheen and specification standards; identify coating defects, apply corrective actions including back rolling; and complete equipment cleaning, waste disposal and safe material storage.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can produce quality finishes by spray painting by interpreting work instructions, applying required safety and workplace controls, preparing substrates and protected work areas, setting up and testing spray systems, mixing and adjusting paint materials, operating spray equipment to specification, correcting coating defects and completing clean-up, waste disposal and safe storage activities according to workplace procedures.
