  • Parking brake: When the air pressure in the brake system is low (such as when the parking brake is engaged or the engine is off), a spring within the air brake spring brake mechanism pushes the diaphragm or piston outwards.
  • Secondary braking system: In the event of a loss of air pressure within the main braking system due to a malfunction, the air spring acts as a secondary fail-safe mechanism. The spring automatically engages, stopping the vehicle similar to its parking brake function. This redundancy helps to provide a level of braking even in case of air system failures.
