Details: This dramatic Victorian micro-mosaic ring depicts a fantastic green and gold beetle surrounded by enamel-backed stars and later set in a more modern, very finely crafted 14k ring. The micro-mosaic is comprised of tiny enamel glass and stone bricks called "tesserae" which are arranged with painstaking detail. It is set in silver and engraved on the back with "Susie Ireland, Queens Hotel Exeter, 1891."

In the 18th-19th century, archeology was an exciting new science and discoveries were being unearthed every week, filling the news with stories of lost cities and fabulous treasures. Wealthy Europeans and Americans would travel to Italy, Greece, and Egypt on a "Grand Tour" to view the art and ruins of the ancient world and souvenirs were very trendy.

Micro-mosaics originated in Rome, Italy and were particularly popular with the visitors often depicting miniature versions of famous Italian landmarks. The richest tourists would commission their own finely crafted mosaics with animals and famous works of art being favorite subjects. The small size of the micro-mosaic was appealing and could be worn as they continuing to journey or sent back home for loved ones as a kind of fore-runner to modern postcards.

Measurements:  This lovely ring is a size 8. The mosaic measures 1.15" round by 1/2" tall off the finger, 16.62g.

Origin: We believe this mosaic was most likely fabricated in Rome where most of the finest examples originated, and engraved in England. It may have served as a lid for a small box before its current incarnation, set as an exquisite 14k gold ring. C. 1891.
