This resist-dyed linen noren is handcrafted by Kiyoe Masao and his son. They specialize in dyeing with natural materials, primarily indigo, but this is their second piece featuring the soot-based ink used in traditional Japanese calligraphy.

The design is inspired by the Mingei movement, which elevates the dignity of humble, functional design found in everyday artisan craft over the superfluous and ornate.

The natural linen and dark sumi dye provide a pleasant and natural pairing. The design separates and rejoins as you pass through, or when a breeze blows by.
