The Naniwa Omura #150 is a heavy-duty coarse whetstone designed for chip repair, edge correction, blade thinning, and reshaping work.
Its aggressive cutting power removes steel quickly, making it ideal for repairing damaged edges, correcting uneven bevels, or restoring heavily worn knives before moving on to finer stones.
What I particularly like about the Omura #150 is that it cuts very efficiently while wearing relatively slowly for such a coarse stone. This helps maintain a flatter surface for longer and provides a more consistent sharpening experience.
Another major advantage is its large “Sancho-gake” size. Compared with many standard coarse stones, the larger surface offers excellent stability and makes sharpening feel more controlled and comfortable, especially when working on larger knives or extensive repairs.
While this stone is not intended for everyday sharpening, it is an invaluable tool when a knife requires more than routine maintenance. After using the #150, I recommend progressing to a medium-grit stone such as a #1000 to refine the edge.
This is one of the coarse stones I use when repairing customers’ knives at Japanese Knife Garage, particularly for chip removal, thinning, and major edge restoration work.
