Chinese Five Spice Powder

It is believed that Chinese were attempting to produce a "wonder powder" encompassing all of the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. These elements are represented by the five flavours sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the five elements and tastes are manifested in different parts of the body and when there are imbalances in these elements, illness can result. A standard five spice powder recipe calls for Fennel, Cloves, Cinnamon, Star Anise and Szechuan Peppercorns. However, there is no fixed recipe as the blends vary from one region to another. For instance, Five Spice powder made with licorice in place of star anise (Both anise and licorice taste of the flavor "licorice") have taken over the modern marketplace. Ours contain Ceylon Cinnamon (which is much healthier than Cassia), Ceylon Black Pepper (which has a stronger flavour than Szechuan), Fennel, Cloves, and Licorice. 

Suggested Use: Five spice powder is the most popular Chinese spice blend. It is used in marinades, meat rubs, braising and stir-frying for its unique flavors and aroma.
