I love a burnt orange pot, especially an old one from North Carolina, and I think this is a real beauty, with quite a presence. It dates to the 1930s, and was made by A.R. Cole at what was then Rainbow Pottery in Sanford, North Carolina, later to become A.R. Cole Pottery. The stamp on the bottom--“RAINBOW POTTERY/HAND/MADE/SANFORD N.C.” dates it prior to 1941 from what I have learned, and I have found a few others of the same form definitively dated to the 1930s. 

Referred to by Cole I believe as an "Apothecary Jar" I really love everything about it, from the great drippy glazing to the jug-type form with barrel-like incising near top and bottom, to these wonderful, playful handles that lend sculptural interest from every point of view. A great addition to a collection of Southern pottery (or any pottery!) and the perfect vessel to fill with branches of autumn leaves or winter greens for a really dramatic arrangement or fabulous centerpiece.

Nice and big at 9 1/2" tall x 10" across at handles x 8" across in other direction. Very good condition. There in one small surface chip on one of the handles mid-way down; minor and not visible when viewed from front or back.
