A rare early Regency period pair of 'Klismos' chairs of unusual shape, faux-bois decorated, parcel-gilt and brass-inlaid. Scotland, circa 1810.
Why we like them
These unusual and sophisticated chairs are among the most interesting examples that we have handled. Their complex shape is beautifully complemented by the intricate brass marquetry inlays and gilded foliate patterns to the backs. The seats are covered in antique silk brocade. A very chic addition to an eclectic or modern interior.
The term "Scotch Empire" was coined by the late Earl of Wemyss, referring to his own family's fine collection at Gosford House, and perfectly encapsulates the unique character of these chairs.
