Fifth Air Force - Pacific Air Forces

The Fifth Air Force (5 AF) is a numbered air force of the United States Air Force Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). It is headquartered at Yokota Air Base, Japan. It is the U.S. Air Force's oldest continuously serving Numbered Air Force. The organization has provided 70 years of continuous air power to the Pacific since its establishment in September 1941.

The 5th Air Force was activated just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor and immediately found itself in combat against Japanese forces in the Philippines and throughout the Southwest Pacific. During World War II, the 5th Air Force became one of the most successful air forces in history, conducting operations under General Douglas MacArthur's command throughout the Pacific campaign.

World War II to Present - Continuous Service

During World War II, the 5th Air Force fought in some of the most challenging conditions imaginable—operating from primitive airfields in New Guinea, the Philippines, and other Pacific islands. The command's fighters, bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft conducted air superiority missions, close air support, strategic bombing, and maritime interdiction operations that were critical to Allied victory in the Pacific.

After World War II, the 5th Air Force continued its mission in the Pacific, fighting in the Korean War, supporting operations in Vietnam, and maintaining air defense and power projection capabilities throughout the region. The command has adapted to changing threats and technologies while maintaining its core mission of providing air power in the Pacific.

Today, the 5th Air Force continues to operate from Yokota Air Base, Japan, commanding Air Force units throughout Japan and the Western Pacific. The command maintains fighter, airlift, special operations, and support forces ready to respond to any contingency in the region.
