Shakespeare's female characters propose some interesting contradictions. It was an age when women held few legal rights, and were offered fewer opportunities. Female roles were played by men or boys, as women were not allowed on the stage. Nevertheless, the women of Shakespeare demonstrate a very modern sense of their worth and agency. Titania is a Queen. And what a queen wants, a queen takes.
