Background of 9S

YoRHa No.9 Type S (commonly known as 9S) is a scanner android in the video game series NieR: Automata. As a naturally curious, high end android, 9S is designed to hack and gather valuable information to fight against the Machines (an evil race of sentient robots). With his exceptional hacking and information gathering abilities, he is deployed to the frontlines as one of the main intelligence gatherers of the YoRHa (the military force of androids).

9S's signature blade, the Cruel Oath is a small sword 9S uses in countless, gruesome battles during and after the 14th Machine War. Counterpart to 2B's powerful Virtuous Contract, the Cruel Oath is a black oriental sword that gives off a seriously deadly aura when used.
