As Venice faced economic challenges due to the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market, Venetian artisans created Millefiori glass as a countermeasure. These richly colored and decorative glass beads became highly sought after in African bead trade, where merchants crafted cylindrical Millefiori beads and transported them as trade beads to Africa.
