Dzi beads are ancient beads from Tibet, similar to etched carnelian, created by baking natural dyes onto agate to design patterns. These beads are believed to date back to approximately the 1st to 6th centuries AD. Despite their age, the ingredients of the dyes used remain largely mysterious. Dzi beads are primarily found in Tibet, but have also been discovered in Bhutan and regions of the Himalayas such as Ladakh. The patterns, especially the round "eye" designs, carry different meanings and are highly coveted when in good condition. In Tibet, they are considered amulets for wealth and prosperity and are cherished as heirlooms. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tianzhu," with many replicas being produced using similar techniques. However, authentic ancient Dzi beads remain incredibly rare and valuable.
